Is Design Subjective?

I'm sure many of you have been faced with this topic from client interactions, but I was curious what everyone's thoughts were.

For some reason, this subject has come up a lot lately from people who I talk to about design (usually non-creatives) and it really irks me. People I've run into seem to believe that design is predominantly subjective in the way it is consumed. Personally, I think there is a certain level of subjectivity to it, but there are certainly "best practices" within design that are, in fact, better than others.

What do you think?

I agree, I think the most telling aspect of good design is seeing if it stands up to the test of time. I've observed that usually those who think design is completely subjective are the ones that constantly change their minds and spend lots of money on redesigns trying to keep things trendy.

If you ask most people what their favorite designs are, I bet they are the ones that follow good design practices.
